Discover The Great Lakes

Discover a natural paradise of crystal clear waterways, spectacular beaches, deep green forests and breath-taking views. The Great Lakes region is NSW’s water playground with its 145kms of stunning coastline and glittering mosaic of inland waterways based around the impressive Wallis, Smiths and Myall Lakes networks and deep green forests.

The twin towns of FORSTER/TUNCURRY are home to NSW's second biggest fishing district. Tuncurry means "plenty fish" in the Worimi language and with lots of deep sea, rock, beach and lake action for the recreational angler, the region enjoys a long-lived claim to the name. For the epicurean there’s fine food, art and craft galleries, museums and a cinema. Dolphin and whale watching cruises, sailing and diving charters, 4WD tours, beach and bush walks make the most of a unique natural environment while there are sports facilities, clubs and accommodation to suit all preferences.

Idyllic PACIFIC PALMS is named in honour of the area's fine cabbage tree palms. Booti Booti National Park, Wallis and Smiths Lakes and the ocean, put Pacific Palms within easy reach of bushwalks, endless recreational water activities and wildlife diversity. Elizabeth, Boomerang and Bluey's beaches enjoy fantastic surf conditions. There is no shortage of activities catering for all ages. Amusement parks, cinemas, unique shopping, clubs, fine dining, golf courses, sailing, kayaking, swimming, fishing, surfing, markets and numerous events are but a few of the opportunities that await the visitor.

TEA GARDENS/HAWKS NEST lie either side of the Myall River where it meets the north shore of Port Stephens. These peaceful twin towns combine to provide a setting for a holiday where keeping it natural is the key. Explore the Myall Lakes National Park or relax and fish in Port Stephens at Jimmy’s Beach.  Houseboat, dinghy and bicycle hire will get you moving while a walk on the beach can be rewarded by dolphins frolicking in the surf. Whales ply the sea just off the coast during their twice-yearly migration.

Ancient ranges, fascinating villages and the sense of steady human endeavour in gentle harmony with the environment best describes the rural HINTERLAND. Here the soothing sounds of the sea are replaced with the mooing of cattle and the distant hum of farm machinery. Explore the township of Bulahdelah located on the Myall River and entrance to the Myall Lakes. Or follow Thunderbolt Way through the hinterland to historic Stroud.

Choose your own destination and choose your own pace. Choose to relax, take it all in or set out to explore the great diversity of attractions in the beautiful Great Lakes.
